Canon EOS 7D – it’s not 50D!   1 comment

As any photo enthusiast familiar with, for many years, Canon’s X0D series was essentially the default choice for camera enthusiasts, professionals and aspiring-professionals who wanted top-level image quality and functionality without the price consideration like pro-level camera such as the 1D series. For so long, 10D, 20D and 30D were successful as popular cameras and we didn’t have to spend long shooting with them to understand its characters. Nonetheless, like every other sector of the DSLR market, there are always very competitive rivals, in terms of price and features.

Here comes the Canon EOS 7D, a camera that seems to be determined to fight back the king of APS-C empire. From the first look it’s just similar to EOS 50D, but a closer look will show that this is definitely far from true refreshment of what we’re used to understand in this range. And indeed, this camera is meant to be the big brother to the 50D, not a replacement for it.

Eighteen megapixel sensor is surely quite tempting, but feel free to imagine before you even fire a shot is via impressive new viewfinder. Using 1.0X magnification and 100% coverage provides a noticeable improvement over the 0.95X, 95% finder in the EOS 50D and puts this camera on the same footing as the D300S (Its 0.94X finder ends is essentially the same size, once the focal length multiplier effect of its fractionally larger sensor is taken into account).

But what should be kept in mind is that 7D is not 50D with a new sensor, viewfinder and revised body – other major changes such as a new AF system with a dedicated processor, dual Digic 4 processors and new shutter mechanism to allow 8fps continuous shooting and the ability to control groups of external flashguns using its built-in flash will surely create big difference. Make your choice with full consideration; Canon wants to be the default choice again.
