I have to admit that in digital photography I personally have been a laggard. I have two traditional film cameras – a vintage manual focus Nikon and a Canon Rebel, which is a newer model equipped with auto focus. Up until recently, I’ve been heroically resisting the temptation of trying a digital camera, although each of my kids has had one for years now. But a few days ago, my father gave me one of his – a mid-priced Olympus – because he didn’t like the menus. I’ve decided to give it a try and I was surprised I actually like it.

I take a lot of pictures so obviously the first thing I loved about it is that it had no film. I also got two large memory cards from my father along with the camera and I never run out of film. I no longer have to pay for developing photos that I don’t even like. Actually, I don’t develop photos at all. And now that I’m able to see them on the spot, I can delete the ones that turn out wrong and free up space for new ones. I take hundreds of pictures and this helps me improve my technique and get better results. I can still keep the things I liked about traditional photography as my camera lets me select film speed and worry about shutter speed/aperture combinations. This means that I can still use my photographic skills, which is a very good thing. I also love that I don’t have to wait for days to see how the pictures turned out like.

Another thing I love about digital photos is the fact that you can edit them later. I haven’t purchased Photoshop yet, though I plan to buy the Elements program soon. For now I just use Picasa, which is free, and my PhotoDeluxe application which came with the scanner. Even with these basic programs I can still change the photos to a great extent. I sometimes have problems with the exposure because I don’t always notice backlighting. Luckily, poor exposure can be easily corrected afterwards, and the same thing you can do with red eyes or excessive tint.

You can also adjust contrast, sharpen focus and warm up colors. Cropping is another tool I use very often. It helps me remove parts of the background or excess sky. I can even transform a landscape photo into a close-up if I remove a large part of it. You also have a lot of special effects. You can transform your photo into an oil painting, add filters, neon, glow – just set your imagination free.

When I’m all set, I can send those photos I really like to a processing service. With Picasa you have an option to send your photos to a processor over the Internet and you will get the printed photos into your mail. Or you can upload the pictures to a website, use them in a blog or email them to your friends. Having so much control over your photos is just great. If you haven’t already switched to digital photography, you should think about it. It is a real blessing.

Journaling is a great way to preserve your most private thoughts, feelings and memories. It is something you do just for you and may not want just anybody to see. It can be a great form of self-therapy as you work through the situations and emotions of your life. Journaling is a way to get out frustrations, deal with anger and disappointments as well as celebrating the victories and happy moments. Adding pictures to your journal helps to make the stories you write come alive and become much more enjoyable to come back to. Creating your own journal online with free online photo sharing stories is a great way to keep the things you want private personal and to share the things you want only with those you chose to share with.

Pictures often capture things that can’t be expressed in other ways. The stories you write can help you work through your feelings as the photos inspire you. Perhaps you have a photo of you with a boyfriend or girlfriend at the Prom and you write about the wonderful evening you had and how your date spilled punch on your shoe, but it was so funny that you couldn’t be angry. You will laugh again and again as you reread that and relive the emotions you felt. Maybe if you look closely at the photo you will see the spot that was left after you and your best friend tried to wash it off in the bathroom. Free online photo sharing stories make it easy to upload and create these memories that can last a lifetime.
Of course, you might not want your online journal to be private. Maybe you would like to share it with the world. Think of how a journal can change the way people see the world. Remember The Diary of Ann Frank? Creating free online photo sharing stories is a great way to other people insight into the situations and circumstances of life that you go through. It can be a way to share your story with the future generations of the world. You are a unique individual and certainly must have a lot to share with others. You have a chance to preserve your own unique history and share it with the generations.

In summary, journaling is an important thing that everyone should do in their lives. For some people a regular paper journal makes sense, but for others making their own photo journal with free photo sharing stories online is a much easier and more efficient choice. The special moments of your life can be captured and preserved whether they are for your eyes only or to share with the entire world including future generations. Creating free online photo stories is simple and easy. This kind of online journal allows you to express yourself creatively while exploring your thoughts and emotions. As you reflect on the choices you have made in the past, the future often becomes more clear and you can choose to make it whatever you want.

What a tripod is doing is to create a very stable platform that the camera you have can use and allow you to take long exposures and not have the risk that the camera will shake and spoil the picture you take. Of course, you could just rest the camera somewhere, but with the help of the tripod, you could lock the camera in any position and you dont have to be afraid that the camera will fall over. But you might ask yourself how long would a long exposure be? The factor is the camera shake. Long exposure is considered one which you can not hand-hold steady enough. For example, if you zoom out to wide angle, the time can be somewhere at 1/30 to 1/60th of a second however, if you zoom right in on one long lens, it can be very short, 1/600th or 1/1000th from a second. You might think this is not a very long exposure. Maybe we need a new term for tripod’s little here. Probably you noticed that sports photographers that are doing long lens, they usually work with amono pod, instead of a tripod, on their cameras. Thats not because mono pods are better, but because of their convenience in changing locations really quickly which outweighs the advantages that a tripod brings. Hence, a mono pod is really useful only if you need some quickly shots on a long lens , taken from different positions. Even if you use a tripod, there is a chance that the camera will move while you take the shot. Thats because the act of pressing on the shutter may cause movement. Even if this will be slight, the effect of magnifying of the lens will transform it to camera blur or shake blur. One way to avoid this phenomenon is using a cable release or a remote control when you use a tripod. The camera’s self timer can also be used in case you dont have any of these. So in the case where the camera moves at the time when you press the shutter, this will have settled long time before the photograph actually is taken. Some of the cameras do have a self timer option precisely for this purpose, also called a short self timer. A longer shutter speed gives you benefits in the sense that a smaller aperture can be used for some greater depth of field or you can use a lower ISO for better quality. But, its a minor benefit compared to the psychological one brought by the tripod to the process of taking a photo. Simply using a tripod will slow you down, but that’s a beneficial thing. Havent you looked at a photo and said: “it looks great, but there is one little mistake, that I wish I had spotted at that time.” So, that’s one helpful thing that the tripod brings. The explanation for you noticing the problem is that more time is spent by you carefully looking at the pictureafter you have taken it. Its always easier to spot mistakes after you made them. I hope that, people will understand the need of a tripod and its usefulness. The best thing I can advice to anybody is to get a tripod and use it in order to improve the skills ofphotographing.

How many of us have photographs we have taken through the years lying around loose without being put in photo albums? Maybe there are piles and piles of pictures just gathering dust, sitting in shoeboxes. We all know this scenario, and it’s never too late to organize with photo albums!

The wonderful thing is that there are so many sorts of albums to choose from. Whether digital photography or conventional film is your thing, there is something for everyone. In the realm of hard copy pictures, there are self-adhesive, three-ring binder, and European leather-bound styles to choose from. Three-ring binder and magnetic self adhesive styles are nice, because you can take pictures in and out of the album, rearranging them without ruining the pictures or photo album. Simply slip photos under the clear protective sheet, and they look good as the day they were developed. Leather-bound photo albums are great for special occasion photos. These rich volumes keep all of your most precious pictures together in style, whether they are keepsakes from a wedding, family vacation, or graduation.

A digital photo album is less formal, and great to have if you have a memory card filled up with pictures. First, all you need to do is transfer images on the memory card to a disk. Then, you can put your disk inside the photo album, along with an index card that shows all the pictures on it. All of your pictures are organized on the disk, with easy access and identification.

While you are on a roll getting your life organized, you may want to look into getting one of those new day planners. Day planners are wonderful because you have all of your appointments, meetings, and other important engagements in one portable spot. Many day planners break up time not only by month and day, but also by hours, so you can enter different activities next to a corresponding time. Day planners come in a variety of different colors, such as metallic silver and red. If you want to match your planner to your outfit or purse, there are lots of colors to choose from. Also, you can get them in leather or pleather. Best of all, if you choose to purchase day planners and photo albums, shipping is often free if you spend fifty dollars or more. Get a presents for all your loved ones and save!

If you haven’t used any Photoshop software, should you start with its newest version Photoshop CS aka Photoshop 8? If you’re already using an older version, is the reduced price for an upgrade to Photoshop CS worth it?

What and What Not to Expect from Adobe Photoshop CS

CS stands not for Counterstrike but for Creative Suite. The whole package includes new versions not only for Photoshop but also for InDesign, Illustrator, GoLive, Acrobat, and ImageReady.

Version Cue – A file management system that allows you to locate files; its value depends on just how much you’re using Adobe programs.

RAW – This is a new format introduced as an add-in package for the previous version but is now included in Photoshop CS. It is definitely leagues better than the more common JPEG format, but unfortunately, no digital camera currently uses this format yet. Nevertheless, there are a lot of things you can do with RAW. If you convert your photos into RAW, you’ll be able to evaluate the noise reduction of every image and develop or edit it until you achieve the desired results.

Match Color – This option is a definitely a godsend! With Match Color, users of Photoshop CS finally have a simple and trouble-free way of combining two pictures that have been taken with dissimilar levels. Let’s say that you wish to make a collage, and you want all the photos to have a uniform tone or color. You can do that by using Match Color. Simply open all the photos you need to change then start adjusting the slider. Increase or decrease the tone until you achieve complete balance for all photos. Yes, it’s that easy!

Highlighting and Shadowing – This is arguably the best feature of the newest Photoshop version. Instead of painstakingly adjusting the curves and levels of your images one by one, highlighting and shadowing allows you to take an easy shortcut without sacrificing the quality of the outcome. For best results, you should start playing with shadowing first. After achieving satisfactory results, that’s the time you should switch to adjusting the highlighting options.

Blur Filter Option – If you’ve been inordinately fond of the blur filter option in Photoshop 7.0, you’ll definitely fall in love again with the new and improved blur filter option from Photoshop CS. This time, it takes the name of lens blur, and indeed you’ll encounter options that are all related to lenses such as blade curvature, focal distance, specular highlights, and iris. If you know what those terms stand for respectively then yes, you can expect the new lens blur option to work just the way those terms suggest. The only probable complaint is the amount of time this option consumes when applied to images that are larger than usual or contain too much detail.

Photo Filters – Professional photographers would certainly rejoice once they understand how photo filters of Photoshop CS work. To put it simply, photo filters allow you to correct the color choices in a photo almost automatically. To the untrained eye, error in color is quite difficult to spot unlike glaring flaws in contrast and brightness. But this is something that photographers would surely welcome because it gives them yet another digital means to make their already beautiful photos even more exquisite.

Ultimately, Photoshop CS is a dream come true for both beginners and professionals…but only if you’re willing to work hard learning how to navigate around it.

CanvasDezign provides you with the best choices in improving your image by balancing the color, retouching faded areas and cropping. This enables us to produce proofs that we can send to you for your consideration. Whenever you are thinking of transforming your photos to canvas, think of us.

The process of color balancing involves a delicate balance of contrasts, shades and color intensities that will make your images better to look at. We also provide you suggestions about whether the picture will look better in black and white. There is something about black and white prints that make their appeal timeless. You can even opt for a sepia print for your photo on canvas.

We provide you a host of services in transferring your Photographs to canvas. Our job is to ensure that the pictures look the best they can. We can even do cropping and let you suggest which looks best with your picture. Usually, you can print a cropped image in nearly the size of the original image, so you do not have any problems hanging them up. The stretched bars we use to do this are customized and of the best quality. We do not believe in the low cost and low quality readymade ones.

We also believe that a bit of retouching at certain spots can bring out the best in your picture. For instance, if you have a picture where you would like to have the dribble on the face of a person taken off or even a dollop of snow taken off, we can do that for you. The most common request we face is to have the digital date stamp taken off a photo. We provide you these services so that you can have a better picture.

We even provide you with photo on canvas blocks. We let you immortalize these special moments in the form of photos on canvas, so that they stay with you forever and do not fade away.

You can even create a wonderful talking point to your room by having the best moments of your life frames as a montage. You can frame the best and the most touching moments of your life and have them set up in your living room or study. It will let you create a wonderful atmosphere.
You can also use our in house collection of wonderful images to create an artwork for yourself. We use the best quality of inks to create the canvas for you. This ensures that the canvas art stays with you for years; our special anti fade ink ensures that you can enjoy the photographs on canvas for at least 75 years.

We offer you the best solution for printing photo to canvas. The only thing you have to do is to send us a copy of your photo. We will ensure that it is printed in the best way possible and delivered straight to your door, ready to be hung.

Summer offers a lot of opportunity for fun and frolic in the sun, and you’ll want to capture as many memories as possible.

The best way is with a digital camera. While digital video has its place in preserving family memories, there’s nothing like having an album full of photos to look at while you talk and share with the people you love.

It’s easy getting great photos this summer – photos that you’ll cherish forever and true family heirlooms. Now, you might say – “they’re just photos of lunch by the pool,” but these are the moments that create your best memories.

With just a little attention to detail, you can improve the quality of your photos. When you share them, whether it’s online via email or in a professionally printed and bound photo album, you’ll be prouder than ever. You’ll turn a snapshot into a wonderful keepsake.

Tip #1. Take a lot of photos. You’ll be shooting outdoors which means changing light and weather conditions, sometimes within a matter of moments. Even water clarity can change, depending where you’re swimming. So if you see a great scene of people playing in the water, snap away. Some of those pictures may turn out, some may not, but you all but guarantee getting a great shot if you take a lot of pictures.

Tip #2. Look for photos in shallow water or on the edge of the beach. This is where some of the fun occurs. People tossing a water toy back and forth, sandcastle building, body surfing and general playing the water. If small children are present, this is where you’re like to get your best shots.

Make sure you have stable footing as there can be holes, slipper rocks or shifting sands. Also, if you have an underwater camera, an interesting shot might be if your camera lens is halfway in the water and halfway out. Or, if you are taking a group picture, have the group stand in ankle or knee deep water.

Tip #3. Take time with the exposure. Outdoor light can cause a lot of problems – the brights can be very bright and the darks very dark. This can make it tough for your camera’s light meter to get a proper reading. If you can, bracket the exposure one or two f-stops on either side of what your light meter recommends. Also, if your camera has spot metering, you can use this to your advantage when trying to photograph a shady area. (The other areas will be overexposed, however).

Of course, you should try to put your subject in the best light possible. If it’s a candid shot, try to position yourself in the best light relative to your subject. This will greatly depend on the position of the sun.

Taking photos at the beach or pool can be filled with challenges, but the rewards will last a lifetime. With a little attention to detail, you can get pictures you’ll be proud to share!

Back in the days of my first introduction to photography hobby, I did not realize that a tripod become so important for even amateur photographer like me, who merely do photography activities only as a hobbies, spending the time in the wild and outdoor to capture the golden moments without any intention to capitalize the result.

However, when I first bought a tripod, I just thought that it’s only a secondary equipment that will be a burden when I travel around and take some photos. Therefore, I just bought a low quality and light weight tripod in order that I can carry it along with my photography equipments.

As time goes by, the more extreme the location I visitited to take photos, I started to realize that sturdy, rugged, and high-quality tripod is very essential for me when trying to capture the slow speed moments (golden and blue hours), capturing water movement, star trails, etc.

As other camera equipments, tripod is a must have investment that should be considered one purchase that will be used forever. So try consider to buy better quality tripod such as manfrotto, gitzo, or other famous brand and spend rather significant amount of money in order that you don’t have to waste your investment by upgrading to many tripod because they’re no longer suit your needs.

Here are things that should be considered when purchasing a tripod:

Construction Material:

There are carbon-fiber and aluminum type of tripod. If budget doesn’t matter to youl, prefer to choose carbon fiber to obtain greatest weight to stability ratio compared to the more common aluminum tripod. Although it is lightweight, it’s strong enough to to be used in almost every situation and terrain. Choose wisely in order that you don’t have to end up replacing a tripod that didn’t fit your needs, where the extra cost of eventually purchasing another tripod might cost you the same price.

Tripod Height:

There are 3 heights that you should be concerned with:

The maximum height

The minimum height

The folded height.

Just choose tripod that suit your needs and also body height. In average, maximum height of 160cm will be fine because eye-level height is usually preferred. The tripod that is right for you is the one that does not stay at home due to the tripod’s weight or the size.

Centerpost:

There are 2 options available for the centerpost:

smoothed

geared.

The smooth centerpost is extended by holding the centerpost and raising it. The geared version has a small crank on the side, and when turned, raises or lowers the centerpost. The geared version allows you to raise or lower the tripod with one hand which is for some, and advantage. There is also an option with the smooth centerpost. Some manufacturers allow the centerpost to be removed and turned upside down so that the camera can be closer to the ground, upside down. This feature comes in handy some times. If you feel that this might be of value, then consider the smooth centerpost.

Legs:

There are two choices of type of tripod legs:

tubular

channels.

Tubular models are almost always heavier, resulting in a longer life span and a more stable support. The legs usually have 2, 3, 4 or 5 sections. The tripod becomes less stable with more sections added while the tripod’s folded height becomes much shorter. The sections of the legs are adjusted by means of a leg brace, the more common types being either a flip-lock or clamp lever or the threaded twist lock. Threaded twist locks offer good strength and rigidity, but take longer set-up and breakdown time. They are also subject to over tightening and can pick up sand and grit. Flip-lock or clamp levers are generally the most satisfactory overall because of quick set-up, trouble-free operation (easy to use with gloves), and long term durability. The type of locking device is usually a personal decision since there are many pros and cons for each type of locking device.

Feet:

The tripod might have a combination of two types of feet:

outdoor use

indoor use.

Some tripods allow you to unscrew the bottom of the legs to produce a pointed end for outdoor use. When the feet are set to normal, the legs have a rubber bottom for indoor use.

Head:

Check the specifications on the maximum weight that the head can handle to make sure that it will work. Check your camera equipments and find out the total weight of camera with the heaviest lens mounted on it to make sure you buy suitable tripod for your equipments. Pan-tilt heads are excellent for landscape and macro work. For my personal preference, ball-head type is very suitable because it can provide free movement while keeping the panning or vertical movement locked.

Stability Test:

If possible, mount your camera on the tripod that you are considering. Stomp on the ground next to your tripod and watch the camera lens move. Then, jiggle the leg of the tripod and watch the camera lens. You are looking for the least amount of lens movement and the quickest recovery (how long does it take the lens to stop jiggling). The smaller or lighter the tripod, the harder it will stand up to this stability test.
