Peeling Bananas

For fifty some years I have been peeling bananas. It is often a struggle. I look for anything to get a starting cut into the skin near the stem so that I can start the peeling process without smushing (come on, that has to be a legitimate word…), the fruit. I have tried everything from a fingernail to a key, but knives work best.

Start From the Other End</strong>

I recently watched a short video on the Internet. It was about how to peel a banana. I watched for amusement, as I already know how to perform that particular task. Uh, I thought I knew how to peel a banana. The more efficient way to free the banana from its skin is mind-boggling simple. Start from the other end! OMG, it works so much better!

Tools, Techniques and Pain Points

I remember once, giving a demonstration at Photo Plus in New York on Photoshop. At the end of my presentation one of the people approaching me at the podium was a man who identified himself as one of the engineers for Photoshop.

He said he would love to have a talk with me about my “Pain Points”, areas where I was continuing to use tools and techniques I had learned in Photoshop years earlier, and was continuing to use despite the fact that there were new and better tools and techniques. Geez, and I was passing on these “pain points” to my audience. Embarrassment!

Preconceptions, Old Habits and Fresh Eyes

OK, where am I missing other solutions to problems hiding in plain site? Where in my business am I being a slave to preconceptions and old habits? What are the pain points in my photography business?

Perhaps more importantly, how do look at my business and at my photography through fresh eyes that I might see what these pain points are? How can I re-frame my business and be sure I am on course for my future plans.

A Different Perspective

One way to look at one’s business through “fresh eyes” is to have someone else look at your business. A little over a year ago I had my brother do just that. The fact that he was totally un-involved in the photography world gave him the ability to look at my business from a totally different perspective…and it radically altered the thrust of my efforts.

It was his observations that pointed out to me the wisdom of embarking on an Internet-centric path of SEO (search engine optimization), creating an online image database, and adding content ranging from articles and interviews to a photo blog.

An Open Mind and Objective Evaluation

If you know someone in a different line of work, who you respect, it might be a good idea to have them review your business and be open to what they might come up with. Of course, you also need to utilize your own knowledge and determine what feedback is actually of use. The tricky part is having an open mind, being able to use objectively evaluate the feedback, and incorporating any new ideas into your business.

Suggestions From Within the Photo Industry

I also welcome suggestions from those within our photo industry. It was at the suggestion; maybe I should say urging, of two of my fellow photographers, Jack Hollingsworth and Shalom Ormsby, that I began my blog centered on stock photography.

I routinely seek out the opinions and ideas of my fellow shooters, but always keeping in mind that it is up to me to determine when those suggestions and ideas are germane to my own business approach. Most of the feedback I get I have either already incorporated, or have decided for one reason or another that it doesn’t work for me.

The hardest part for me, as I mentioned earlier, is keeping an open mind. Those suggestions that I have taken to heart and incorporated into my work have made a huge difference in my approach over the last year. As to how successful this new course will be, only time will tell.

Keywords, the most important element of stock photography

Do you place enough importance on your keywords? If you do your own key wording do you spend enough time on the task? If your agency handles it do you check on them? I recently had an image go up on Getty’s site; An image of an impossible golfing green. In the picture is a small grassy area perched atop a steep rock formation on the jagged California coastline. It is hard to spot in the image at a thumbnail size, but as with any golfing green, a flag hangs from the pole that protrudes up from the hole.

Searching for golf, Chakras, and the Internet

If you do a search for golf on Getty’s site, you won’t find the image. Not yet, anyway, because that keyword was omitted. This is hardly the first time an important keyword has been omitted by an agency, and I am certainly not the only one it happens to. Another example of an egregious keyword omission happened with an image of Chakras. I even submitted the file with the name of jl_Chakra_001. But it took me weeks to get them to finally add that keyword! In yet another example, an image I created to symbolize communication and the Internet does not include either of those keywords, and Getty maintains that neither keyword is appropriate for the image. Oh well, I guess you can’t win every battle.

Mistakes are going to happen

If you made the most perfect stock photo ever, and it nobody ever saw it because of missing or inappropriate keywords, it would not sell as well as a mediocre image that was will key worded. In a sense, the keywords are more important than the image. People perform key wording; mistakes are going to happen. But its extremely important for all of us photographers to make sure that our keywords are done as well as possible whether we do them ourselves, or whether it is a matter of checking on the key wording of our agencies.

My strategy, the best and most appropriate keywords

As I write this I have just finished spending hours key wording the images on my own website. I still have hundreds to go, too. My strategy is not to load as many key words as possible with any given image, but rather to do as clear and concise a job as possible. I want people who search my site to find just what they are looking for and have as good an experience as possible. I don’t want them to have to wade through a lot of images that are not what they are looking for. Further, we have all heard it said that it isn’t nice to fool Mother Nature…and it isn’t nice to try and fool Google either! So when you do your key wording, think about the person who might be looking to find that image, and help them find it by providing the best and most appropriate key words you can.

Now and the future

I firmly believe that one of the best things you or any of us can do to help our stock photography businesses, both now and for the future, is to make sure the images are thoroughly and properly key worded. It might even be more important than the making of the images themselves.

Golf star Tiger Woods recently met with an accident under mysterious circumstances and now he has taken full responsibility of the car crash of his SUV that occurred on Sunday. Woods also praised his wife as she courageously acted to help him.

The star golfer didn’t wanted to reveal any details as he wanted to keep them private but the charges on him are still pending. Woods said on his official site that the situation was his fault and it was obviously embarrassing for him and his family. He also said, “I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

>> View Tiger Woods car crash photos <<

There is huge curiosity among people as to how the crash happened and several rumors and jokes about the crash are making rounds. Several websites also claim that Woods and his wife had been arguing shortly before the crash. Woods rubbished these rumors saying that his family was irresponsible for the incident.

The Police said that when they arrived at Woods home shortly after the crash he was bleeding in and out for several times. Woods admired his wife’s courage as she was the first to help him. Woods wife, Elin Nordegren, smashed the window of the SUV to get Woods out of the car. Woods also requested that he and his family needs some privacy no matter how intrusive the incident is.

Meanwhile, Woods lawyer said that the interview with Woods has been cancelled. The crash is under investigation and the charges are pending.

Woods is the first athlete to become a billionaire after the 2009 Fedex Cup win and one of the World’s most recognizable figures having endorsement deals Gillette, Nike, AT&T and Gatorade. He is scheduled to host the annual Chevron World Challenge tournament in Thousand Oaks, California, which starts on Thursday and is expected to hold an interview on Tuesday.

So you want to make a living from your freelance digital photography. A way to earn extra income that has been showing a lot of promise is selling your freelance photos to stock photography sites like Fotolia. Say you love shooting pictures with your digital camera but never considered making a good amount of money from it. You couldn’t describe this as a job quiting opportunity just yet, but if you dedicate enough time who knows. Doesn’t matter what age you are just as long as you have some extra time to shoot and upload photos. This is just a way to distribute your freelance photography onto a stock photo site that will sell the pictures for you. If someone buys your freelance photos you will get paid, it is a pretty simple concept. Although the concept is simple enough there is a few methods that need to be learned in order to ensure successful picture sales.

Taking good digital pictures is obviously an aspect of getting good conversions. You don’t have to use all the most expensive equipment or know the trade secrets of taking great digital photos. Buyers of stock photography need pictures of almost anything, and that’s what you can give them pictures of anything and everything. The colors in your digital photos have to be neat, balanced and not too dull. You cannot have any signatures, logos or marks on the pictures to define there ownership. Your photos have to be in focus and not have any noise. Lastly it should not look like you were a tourist and you had a more creative outlook.

To help your photos sell you need to photograph things that are useful to buyers. You really have to think like a buyer, because the people who are buying stock photography are marketers, advertisers, website makers, magazines, and graphic designers (to name a few). You need to attract your buyers with keywords or proper picture categorizing. Learning to pick the popular, low competitive keywords will improve your sales dramatically. And will bring a large amount of traffic to your freelance work.

Here are the things you need (or) need to do to get started

-Have an Internet Connection

-Buy a Digital Camera

-Learn about proper keywords, conversion, uploading, stock photography companies (read an Ebook)

Someone coined the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words”, after viewing regular size photos of something beautiful, like the Grand Canyon. How many words would come to mind after viewing a panoramic photo of the Grand Canyon in all of it grandeur in one photo? There would not be enough words to fully describe a panoramic view of one of nature’s beautiful sites like the Grand Canyon.

It is a fact, when purchasing anything especially over the Internet, having a photograph goes a long way in the decision process on moving forward on that purchase.

This brings me to my point that having regular size snapshots of something of interest is good, but having a panoramic view is even better. Let’s look at the real estate arena as to where this can really hold true. Often time real estate agents will go into a home that is for sale and will take a few photos and present the photos along with any legal written description in hopes of engaging potential buyers to buy the property. With the use of the Internet in today’s real estate marketing, some time the problem with these small photos are that they do not tell the whole story of the property, and at times will leave potential buyers dissatisfied and the desire to move on to the next house. This also holds true for home owners that have property for rent, weather it is long term or short term vacation rentals. Real estate for sale or for rent should be presented in a way that makes the viewers see themselves in that house enjoying all that the property have to offer.

Having a lot of small photos of a large area often shows that area in a disjointed fashion and do not give the viewer a true feeling of the area.

Take for example a large back yard with a pool, long patio with patio furniture and a jungle gym play area for the kids. Generally at least three different photos would be taken to show all the areas. Now if that same area was presented in one panoramic photograph, the viewer would get a better sense of the area and realize the actual size of the large area. Go to http://www.activevirtualtours.com to see examples.

For property sale or rentals, having good panoramic photos can make the difference and especially when they are presented in a good virtual tour format. Some virtual tours are simple slide shows of small photos, but a good virtual tour will give a view of the property as it is and not a fish eyed view. The viewer would have the ability to actually go from room to room, inside and outside the house and even things of interest in the surrounding areas of the property.

Pictures are a vital part of our everyday business on the Internet, and so photos that have more details all inclusive are always good to have. When it is appropriate to use virtual tours as a presentation tool, it will make those photos even better.

If standard size photos are worth a thousand words, then panoramic photos are worth ten thousand.

Expand your view, go panoramic!

Go to http://www.activevirtualtours.com to see how to improve real estate sales and vacation rentals using NAS Photography, LLC creator of Active Virtual Tours.

One of my first award winning photographs was a photo with a waterfall in the background and a stream leading from its base right into the foreground. I was standing in the middle of the stream at a fairly low angle, but what made this photo unique was that I had also managed to capture several stars reflecting off the water. I admit it; it was pure luck, but with so many people impressed by those little stars . . . I started looking for ways to be able to do that whenever I wanted. That was when I first started exploring the world of photo filters.

Photo filters are NOT going to change a bad photo to a good one, BUT . . . they may change a good photo into a great one. In other words; filters are like the frosting on the cake, if the cake itself tastes bad, it doesn’t matter how sweet the frosting is. For the sake of this photo article we are going to assume you know how to make a good cake (take a good photo), and now you are ready to go to the next level.

Star Filters – these are available in 4 point, 6 point, or 8 point variety. These photo filters add glamour to nature or highly reflective surfaces (like someone playing a trumpet).

Polarizer’s - this type of photo filter is often thought of for enhancing clouds in the sky, but they also give you more control with reflections on water or glass. They also help with extreme photo lighting situations like snow or sand.

Close-Up Filter Set – not everybody can afford an extra $300 to $400 for a macro lens, this set of photo filters is well worth the investment. This gives you the edge to be able to take advantage of, and photograph the unexpected; whether it is a butterfly on a flower or dew on the morning grass.

Split Field Filter – A Split Field Filter allows you to go beyond the limits of traditional depth of field in photography. Half of the lens is basically a close up filter, half is regular glass. Now you can take an extreme close up photo of a flower at the edge of a vast canyon and still have BOTH sections of your photo look crystal clear.

Split Color Filter – This filter comes in several combinations. Similar to the split field filter, part of the filter is just regular glass, BUT the other half is colored. If half the filter is deep orange for example, you can take a photo of any mountain range and make it look like it was taken at sunset.

Spot Filter – The idea behind a spot filter is that a small portion of your photo will appear sharp (usually a spot in the middle) and the rest of the photo looks soft and dreamy. Often used in Wedding pictures or individual portraits.

Soft Focus Filter – As the name implies this photo filter gives the entire image a soft focus or dreamy effect. Use this VERY sparingly or people will think you can’t focus. Besides photo filters there are some other small items that you should tuck into your camera bag to help you improve photographic opportunities. The cost of these photo gadgets are relatively small but can give you big time (professional looking) results.

Double Sided Poster Board – For many years I carried a 10 inch x 12 inch poster board that was black on one side and white on the other. This can be used to make a small subject stand out from the back ground. A small tree frog on grass is much harder to see than one against a black background. This can also be used for controlling light like a small photo reflector.

Spray Bottle – having a small spray bottle of water means now you can take a “flowers with morning dew” photo, even if it’s the middle of the afternoon. You can also make an athlete sweat whenever you want them to; or you can wet down wild hair that is blowing in the wind for a better outdoor portrait.

The last fairly cheap item for big results is a Tripod or a Monopod. Tripods don’t have to be built so a man can sit on it to be of good quality. And if you are worried about space as you are taking your wonderful photo trek into the wilderness consider a monopod. It offers stability as well as making a good walking stick.

All of these items are considered photo add-ons. None of them are required to make a great photo, but when the opportunity arises it’s good to know you have the right tools at your disposal. Of course there are hundred of other photo gadgets and gizmos that you can get, but I advise sticking with the basics. Far more important than anything you can add to the outside, is the vision you have on the inside. Learn the elements of design. Practice leading lines, balance, repetition, framing and the rule of thirds . . . these are the ingredients of a great photo. All the rest is just frosting on the cake.

Photo room dividers have become a very popular in the past few years not only for their ability to section off rooms but also for the fact that they add a personal touch to your decor. These dividers can be great ways to show off artwork and photos but many people do not know how to use them properly. Proper placement and putting the right thing Into your photo room divider will make it be a focal point in the room instead of looking like an afterthought.

Photo room dividers can be bought in many different styles and types of wood to match almost any room. When buying a room divider, you want to think about how It will enhance and complement your decor. Make sure you buy one that is of good quality and sturdy and that will looked cheap in your home. Before you purchase your room divider, you want to make sure that you have the proper place for it. Typical spots for room dividers include corners, flat against the wall and, of course, separating a large space into two smaller spaces. Once you have decided where you going to put it measure carefully to be sure you get the right size room divider for the area.

Types of Photos

Once you have your room divider in hand, you’ll want to stock it a up with photos. This is where many people go wrong. You want your room divider to be a work of art, aesthetically pleasing and enhancing to your current decor. Therefore, you don’t want to fill it up with a bunch of mismatched photos in different colors and themes. Instead, he should strive for one unified theme that goes with the decorating scheme you are ready now. So if you have a modern decor, you might try all black-and-white photos that have an artsy look. If your home is more tropical, you might try grouping a bunch of photos of flowers or palm trees and plants.

Many people make the mistake of filling up with professional type photos of their family members and this really doesn’t add to the decor at all. Professional photos do not really do much to look at all. The perfect fit is if you are a photographer yourself you can go out and take some great photos and fill your photo room divider with those. When choosing your photos, try to keep the colors unified.

Placement of the Divider

Finding the perfect location for your room divider can be a challenge. Try looking for areas that are begging for decoration. One popular spot is in the quarter, you can place the room divider kitty cornered which softens up the square lines. Another great place to put a divider is in a combination room such as a combination living room dining room would you place the divider and between the two rooms to section them off.

When placing your room divider, make sure that it’s not too tippy. You want to fold up the sections so that it is stable and be sure not to put it in a spot where traffic will always be hitting it. You can always put your room divider pulled up behind a chair to add interest to a black wall or play some potted plants in the folds so it doesn’t look so bear in front of the divider and this will also keep people from bumping Into it and knocking it over by mistake.

Room dividers can be great ways to add interest to boring decor and the best part is they are portable! So you can take a photo room divider when you get sick of seeing it in the living room and move into your bedroom. Either way, adding a photo room divider is sure to add unique interest to your home decor.
